When tennis smelled like leather and a raised eyebrow could signal a fault.

Modern tennis may have been codified in England, but its true roots reach back to medieval France, to the Jeu de Paume, a game played by slapping the ball with the palm of the hand.

At Wimbledon in the 1800s, striped blazers, quiet judges, and neatly crossed arms ruled the court. Today, in 2025, all that grace has been handed over to cameras, AI systems, and digital lines that never lie.

Gone are the human line judges. No more kneeling at the sidelines. The tradition remains, yes—but some of the drama, the doubt, and the beauty of error may have vanished with them.
