Perhaps it had to be the Russian, Daniil Medvedev. A complicated player, difficult to fully decipher: capable of moments of brilliance and sudden lapses. For years he was a genuine threat to the giants of the tour; lately he seemed to have lost his way.
Yet not quite. Just when many thought his trajectory was clearly declining, the Russian resurfaces with a significant victory that sends him into the final of the Indian Wells Masters 1000. The victim this time is Carlos Alcaraz, defeated 6–3, 7–6(3) in one hour and thirty-seven minutes.
The Spaniard arrived in full flight. Two recent titles, at the Australian Open and in Doha, and a run of sixteen consecutive victories that seemed destined to continue.
It was not his best day, certainly. But it would be unfair to reduce everything to a dip from the Spaniard. The truth is that Medvedev delivered a match of almost surgical precision.
Solid serving, razor-sharp backhands and controlled tempo: the Russian imposed his tennis with a composure reminiscent of his best seasons.
In the previous rounds he had already shown clear signs. Orderly, rational tennis, without theatrics or distractions. A stripped-down version of his game.
On the eve of the match he had hinted at something. Different balls, a faster court—conditions that could help him. “I think I have a great opportunity,” he said.
On court he proved it was more than a remark. Medvedev opened angles, pushed Alcaraz far from his comfort zone and dictated a pace the Spaniard never fully controlled.
The second set offered Alcaraz a chance to reopen the match. A break and two set points. But his forehand, unusually unreliable, betrayed him at the crucial moment.
The tie-break sealed the story. Alcaraz tried to react, but by then the match belonged to the Russian.
So the Californian final will feature a different protagonist. Medvedev will face Jannik Sinner, who earlier defeated Alexander Zverev with authority.
Over the last two years tennis has grown accustomed to thinking in terms of two dominant forces. But every now and then, between those two planets, a comet appears. This time its name is Daniil Medvedev.
